How did you get sucked into the lighting rabbit hole? It was through the University of Colorado Architectural Engineering program.  You had to emphasize in structures, HVAC, or lighting.  I could not understand anything about structures, HVAC was mostly blowing air around, so that left lighting.  That and Professor David DiLaura had an amazing talent of making you want to learn.
